This wonderful treat is not only bursting with flavor, but it's also a vegetarian friendly option for your dinner party guests. It's also cost effective as well.

The Green Apple and Smoked Gouda Crustini takes about 15 minutes to make for your guests. The flavors are fresh, and this is an especially good appetizer for the Fall when the apples are fresh and in abundance. You can also serve a fresh apple cider along with this dish.

Things You’ll Need

  • 2 Green Apples
  • Several ounces of Smoked Gouda
  • French Bread
  • Olive Oil
  • Oven
  • Large Bowl
  • Baking Sheet

Making the Green Apple and Smoked Gouda Crustini

  1. Turn your oven onto broil.
  2. Slice the French bread into thin rounds. One loaf of French bread should produce about 20 to 30 rounds.
  3. Place the French bread rounds into your large bowl.
  4. Pour a healthy amount of olive oil into the bowl over the rounds.
  5. Toss the rounds repeatedly until they become well covered in oil.
  6. Wash and dry your green apples so that you are sure to remove any pesticides that may be found on them.
  7. Slice the apple into thin rounds. (You may discard the core as you approach them.)
  8. Slice your smoked Gouda into thin slices as well.
  9. Assemble the Green Apple and Smoked Gouda Crustini Appetizers by placing a piece of apple on top of your French bread rounds, followed by a piece of cheese.
  10. Repeat this until all rounds have been prepped.
  11. Spread the rounds out on your baking sheet. (Remember to coat it with a thin layer of non-cook spray.)
  12. Broil your Green Apple and Smoked Gouda Crustini Appetizers for two to three minutes. It is imperative that you watch the oven as they cook. The creaminess of the cheese will have it melting quite quickly. Also, the bread will move from lightly browned to burned in a matter of an extra 30 seconds.
  13. Remove the Green Apple and Smoked Gouda Crustini Appetizers from the oven and allow them to cool for five minutes before serving to your guests.

A Note about Preparation

This is a great appetizer to prepare ahead of time, place on a baking sheet, and keep in the refrigerator until your guests arrive. Because their cooking time is so quick, it’s a great appetizer to hold off until your dinner party is in full flow, then throw them in quickly, and feed your hungry guests.

Consider Adding Bacon

A nice thing about this recipe is that it is vegetarian friendly. However, like with many other foods, bacon always makes it better. When you prep your bacon cook it so that it is still quite moist, about half way as a rule of thumb. Then place a small piece on top of the cheese. Once it’s placed into the broiling oven, it will finish cooking to a nice crisp finish over it’s couple minutes under the heat.
