Easy recipes for appetizers that are Pittsburgh Steeler fans old favorites for your Super Bowl Party. Finger food, dips & spreads to feed a hungry football party crowd.

Football season will be coming to a close in the U.S. with the playing of the Super Bowl. It's a time for friends and neighbors to gather at house parties to watch the big football game even if they are not local fans or live near the cities of the two teams who are playing. These are some easy appetizers, dips and spreads that can make entertaining with finger food simple and fun.

Pittsburgh Steeler Fans Favorites

The first two recipes below are favorites from the first edition of the Three Rivers Cookbook published in 1973 by the Child Health Association of Sewickley. Football fans throughout southwestern Pennsylvania have made these recipes for football parties since the Pittsburgh Steeler's "Steel Curtain" dominated American football in the 1970s with four Super Bowl wins between 1975-1980.

Cheese Dip in a Bread Bowl

This rye bread shell filled with cheese dip can be served on a large bread board or large platter surrounded by pieces of the hollowed out bread and slices of party rye.

Ingredients

  • 24 oz. sharp cheddar cheese grated
  • 4 oz. blue cheese
  • 1 t dry mustard
  • 2 T solft butter
  • 1 t Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 T grated onions
  • 1 12oz bottle beer
  • 1 large round loaf rye bread
  • 1 package sliced party rye

Directions

  1. Cut large circle in top of loaf of rye bread and hollow out leaving the crust as a shell
  2. Retain the cut out bread for dipping
  3. In mixing bowl add all ingredients except beer and allow to soften
  4. Add been slowly and beat until smooth
  5. Fill hollowed out bread with cheese mixture
  6. Garnish with parsley
  7. Refigerate until serving

Curry - Olive Dip

This is a great dip for pieces of pita bread or plain tortilla chips.

Ingredients

  • 1 can cream of shrimp soup
  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • 4 oz can sliced black olives drained & chopped
  • 2 t lemon juice
  • 1/2 t or more curry powder to taste
  • 1 clove garlic finely chopped
  • dash salt & pepper

Directions

  1. Combine ingredients in bowl
  2. Heat in microwave on medium for 2-4 min
  3. Blend well and serve warm

Braunswager Spread

This simple recipe comes from Mom's recipe box from the 1970s using an inexpensive lunchmeat spread very popular at the time.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz. braunswager
  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • 1/2 onion finely grated
  • dash Worcestershire sauce

Directions

  1. Place braunswager and cream cheese in bowl to soften
  2. add onion and Worcestershire sauce
  3. blend ingredients until smooth
  4. wrap in wax paper and chill
  5. spread on crackers or slices of party rye bread

Enjoy the Super Bowl with friends by having a variety of finger foods and some heartier dishes that will feed a crowd. These three simple recipes for flavorful party foods are easy and inexpensive. Make them earlier in the day, and refrigerate until just before guests arrive.

The Three Rivers Cookbook was published as a fundraiser by the Child Health Association of Sewickley , Inc. for 25 years and has won awards from the Southern Living Community Cookbook Hall of Fame and the Walter S. McIlhenny Hall of Fame Tabasco Award. Their last edition, Renaissance Volume IV, was published in 2000.
