Black and Orange Pinwheels

An Easy Halloween Appetizer Recipe

Whip up a batch of these simple pinwheels for some fun Halloween party finger foods.

These pinwheels can be made the day before the party and stored in the refrigerator overnight. When ready to serve, slice the wraps into individual servings and arrange on a platter. How's that for simple?

For some extra spooky appeal, garnish the platter with Halloween shapes cut from orange bell peppers with small cookie cutters. Slice a bell pepper in quarters and remove the seeds, stem, and white parts. With the skin side of the pepper facing up, press tiny, shaped cookie cutters into the pepper. Push the cutters through, and gently remove the pepper shapes from the cookie cutter with the end of a spoon. Store the pepper shapes in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to use.

Tapenade is a sort of pate or spread made from black olives, capers, and olive oil. Herbs, lemon juice, or garlic can be added as well for an extra boost of flavour. Tapenade can be purchased from most large grocery stores, or found at retailers of fine foods or European markets. It's also very easy to make at home! Finely chop about 25 large Kalamata olives and 1 tablespoon capers. Mix these with a couple of teaspoons each of lemon juice and olive oil. The mixture can be blended in a food processor for a smoother texture, or left as is for a more chunky version.

For an even easier rendition of this appetizer recipe, omit the tapenade and shredded carrot, and use only four tortillas. Spread an even layer of the cream cheese mixture over the tortillas, and roll, refrigerate, and slice according to the directions in the recipe. This simplified version will yield 48 appetizers.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, Feta, black olives, and bell pepper; mix well to combine. Divide mixture and spread evenly over each of the tortillas. For each tortilla, top cream cheese layer with a thin layer of tapenade. Sprinkle shredded carrot evenly over the tapenade.
  2. Tightly roll up each tortilla, pressing ends down gently to seal. Wrap rolled tortillas individually in plastic wrap and refrigerate for several hours or overnight. Slice each rolled tortilla into 12 pinwheels and serve. If pinwheels come apart, secure with toothpicks.

Makes 60 appetizers.
